About REDF

As one of the nation’s original venture philanthropies, REDF is working to build a better, more inclusive society, where all people have the jobs and support they need—and the pride, purpose, and path to self-sufficiency they deserve. To make that vision a reality, REDF invests in Employment Social Enterprises (ESE), which are mission-driven, revenue-generating businesses that employ, empower and invest in the potential of people.

ESEs are gaining increasing recognition and have an even more vital role to play as the nation addresses the pandemic-fueled economic downturn and responds to widespread advocacy for racial and economic justice across the country. Public and private entities are looking to REDF to provide its’ signature blend of advice and capital to build this field.

REDF’s Board of Directors has adopted an exciting 2021-2025 strategy with long-term goals of driving ESE scale and market adoption, while achieving meaningful results for the people employed, and a positive social return for public and private investors. As REDF plans for implementation, it continues to focus on achieving data-driven results and is integrating objectives and activities meant to more squarely address racial disparities.

REDF believes that investing in building the capacity and effectiveness of ESEs will result in more work opportunities and a path to economic security and mobility for people who are overcoming significant barriers to work such as histories of homelessness and/or incarceration. To achieve this objective REDF provides a blend of capital and specialized advisory services, while building the evidence base, developing diverse talent and leadership, and advocating for greater public and private sector investment.

At this moment, current high rates of unemployment are likely to be exacerbated by increased homelessness, vulnerability to illnesses like COVID-19, and a larger number of people returning to their communities as prisons and jails reduce overcrowding. ESEs are an essential, evidence-backed strategy to engage these individuals in the workforce even during hard economic times.
