Where leaders come to learn: The Farber Program
The Farber Internship launched with the idea that we could attract top talent to the social enterprise sector by providing socially-minded MBA students the opportunity to work at a social enterprise and use their business acumen to make a significant impact. This on-the-ground experience provides an unparalleled opportunity to be part of the day-to-day operations of a social enterprise while working on a strategic project that will impact the organization and the people they serve, for years to come.
As a Farber Intern, you’ll be part of a connected and collaborative Farber cohort comprised of dedicated, enterprising, MBA students from across the country. Over the course of the summer you’ll come together for three learning sessions led by REDF staff, benefiting from our over 20 years of experience growing and leading the employment social enterprise field. Session topics include double bottom line accounting, how to assess and implement effective employee support strategies, and how REDF has evolved the venture philanthropy model. You’ll also have the opportunity to get to know REDF staff and Board members during our summer events - the Farber luncheon hosted by George R. Roberts, co-founder of KKR and REDF, and our annual Farber Mixer attended by Farber alums, friends of REDF’s work, and REDF staff and board members.
REDF has placed over 160 Farbers at Portfolio companies since 1997. When they graduate, some of our alumni return to or enter the private sector, working in a wide variety of businesses including consulting, financial institutions, and technology. After spending a summer using their skills to change lives, most Farber alumni who work in the private sector continue to "do good" through volunteering or board engagement. Many decide to focus their careers in the social sector, working directly at a social enterprise or financing high-impact social-driven businesses. Regardless of their sector choice, our Farber alumni cite their experience with REDF and our social enterprise partners as a transformative experience.

In 1997, REDF established the Farber Program, in partnership with the Phalarope Foundation, to honor the life and work of Michael E. Farber who passed away in 1996. During his tenure at Rubicon Programs Michael demonstrated entrepreneurial talent, brought dramatic growth through his business acumen, and passion for serving those who were economically disadvantaged. In honor of this pioneering work, REDF inaugurated the Farber Program to develop leaders as they lend their skills to employment-focused social enterprises, and to make a difference in people’s lives, just as Michael did.
