Venture Philanthropy

VENTURE PHILANTHROPY
REDF invests by making grants and loans to some of the most effective and innovative social enterprises around the country, and providing specialized, hands-on, advisory services to help their businesses grow, and their employees thrive. We apply principles of private equity and social equity to invest in solutions that generate a social return on investment – more people employed, higher incomes, more stable housing, and reduced recidivism.

Grant Making Strategy
REDF's national venture philanthropy portfolio is made up of social enterprises selected from a competitive pool to receive multi-year grants and specialized on-going advisory services. REDF has honed a rigorous due diligence and investment approach to identifying organizations that are mission aligned, committed to growth, and poised to benefit from REDF’s business advice. These grants are part of an intensive venture philanthropy relationship between REDF and the social enterprises focused on a shared set of goals that may include growth in social enterprise employment, revenue, new business opportunities, or enhancing the supportive services provided to transitional employees. As part of its grant making strategy, grantees provide detailed information about their enterprises and the individuals they serve to measure progress over time and benchmark against REDF’s national portfolio of social enterprises.

To support social enterprises at an earlier stage of development, REDF also makes one-year trial grants to outstanding social enterprises that have potential to join the national portfolio.
